- City in Cheshire, England, on the river Dee
- 26 km/16 mi S of Liverpool; population (1984)
- 117,000. It is the administrative
- headquarters of Cheshire. Industries include
- engineering and the manufacture of car
- components. Its name derives from the Roman
- Castra Devana, (`the camp on the Dee'), and
- there are many Roman and later remains. It is
- the only English city to retain its city
- walls (2 mi/3 km long) intact. The cathedral
- dates from the 11th century but was restored
- in 1876. The church of St John the Baptist is
- a well-known example of early Norman
- architecture. The `Rows' are covered arcades
- dating from the Middle Ages.
